May is Asian Pacific American Heritage month!! The Handley Regional Library Youth Services Department is celebrating this month by sharing a list of titles that are either written by an individual or featuring a character of Asian Pacific American Heritage. More titles and authors can be found by searching the library catalog using the search term #youthasianpacific.
Now that we are all stuck at home the majority of the time, there is no time like the present to visit old memories of listening to music or discover something new that you aren't familiar with. Our new service, Hoopla has a lot of really great music that you can
"check out" and listen to. When you download an album it is available to you for 7 days and then will be returned automatically. All you need to do is sign up for an account using your library card and you are good to go.
Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes—wherever young readers and books connect! Children’s Book Week is not only a celebration of books, but of connection.
While going through a collection of personal papers, staff at the Stewart Bell Jr. Archives found this sweet handmade dance card for a Grand Masquerade Ball. There isn’t much information about who hosted the ball or when, but the dances, which include a grand march, the two-step, the waltz, German figure, and the Virginia Reel were all popular in the middle to late nineteenth century.
We are thrilled to partner with popular movie production studio NEON to offer our community the new film Spaceship Earth, available to stream at home starting May 8th. 50% of all movie rental proceeds (ticket cost is $3.99) will support the library system to help fund critical materials and programs.
Did you know that a famous classic American writer was originally from Frederick County? When people think about Willa Cather (1873-1946), they often associate her with the Midwest (she spent her teenage and college years there, and many of her novels are set in the Midwest), but actually Cather spent much of her childhood in our neighborhood.
With our branches closed and physical checkouts currently suspended, you may think that there's no way to get graphic novels with your library card. That's not the case at all! As much as we've been promoting our new graphic novel collection for adults, it's definitely not the only option available to you. The library now offers you more ways than ever to get your graphic novel fix, even while social distancing.
