Ms. Donna's Picks: The Magic of Reading!

Magic of Reading Book GraphicSummer is approaching quickly, and soon we will be ready to jump into Handley Regional Library System's Summer Reading Challenge! Keep your eyes open for an exciting new way to participate, read, and earn prizes, all while keeping the health and safety of our patrons a priority.

To get those reading muscles dusted off and ready, Ms. Donna has chosen some wonderful stories about libraries and books. She will read a few for you during the Wednesday morning online Storytime with Puppets, LIVE on the library's Facebook page, so tune in on May 13th at 11:00 AM

You can get a wide variety of wonderful children's books about books on Hoopla this week. Look for Curious George Librarian for a Day by H.A. Rey, Maisy Goes to the Library by Lucy Cousins, A Book is a Book by Jenny Bornholt, and Biscuit Loves the Library by Alyssa Satin Capucilli.

Wild About Books by Catherine O'Hara is available as a movie on Hoopla, and This is Not a Picture Book by Sergio Ruzzier is available on both Hoopla and Libby. No Pirates Allowed! Said Library Lou by Rhonda Gowler Greene is another you can find through both Hoopla and Libby, providing you with more options for your favorite titles.

Libby by Overdrive has a few additional titles you'll want to check out, including Pete the Cat Checks out the Library by James Dean, Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hills, and both The Best Time to Read and The Best Place to Read by Debbie Bertram.

Are you ready to get those reading muscles working? Because this week, (and every week at the library), it's all about those books!

Finally, here's some counting, finger plays, and songs that are sure to inspire your week of exploring the Magic of Reading!

Five Little Books

Five little books at the library
Five little books as great as can be
Along comes (name) with their library card
And takes one home to read!
Four little books at the library
Four little books as great as can be
Along comes (name) with their library card
And takes one home to read!
Three . . . Two . . . One . . .

Librarian in the Town
(Tune: Wheels on the Bus)

The librarian in the town says
"Read a book, Read a book, Read a book"
The librarian in the town says
"Read a book"
All day long.

These Are My Glasses

These are my glasses
(make circles with fingers)
This is my book
(hold both hands palms together in front of you)
I put on my glasses
(put finger circles up to eyes)
and open up my book
(palms together, then hinge open)

And I read, read, read,
(clap hands to rhythm)
and I look, look, look.
(clap hands to rhythm)
I put on my glasses
and open up my book.

Big Books, Little Books

Big Books, little books
(hold hands wide, then close)
Short books, tall
(hands down low, then up high)
Thin books, fat books,
(hold up flat hands, then make fists)
I love them all.
(hug self)
