SCOPE AND CONTENT: This Norman Baker Papers contains Baker’s publications and research concerning the French and Indian War. Baker was particularly interested in Fort Loudoun in Winchester, Virginia, Braddock’s Road in Pennsylvania, and George Washington’s involvement in the French and Indian War.  The collection also includes a number of maps of Braddock’s Road. Baker’s personal papers are also part of this collection, as well as materials related to his interest in the National Space Club.  

Baker published several books and atlases concerning Braddock’s Road, Fort Loudoun, and other aspects of the French and Indian War. Please ask staff for assistance in locating these works in the Reading Room or search the Handley Library Catalog: https://www.handleyregional.org/

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Norman Baker was born in Arkansas in 1926. He graduated from Indiana Institute of Technology with a degree in aerospace engineering and worked as a development engineer in the Bomarc Missile Program with Boeing in Seattle, Washington. Baker was also a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Later in his career, Baker turned to writing and journalism, and published in the fields of defense, military affairs, science, and space. He also had a love of American history and did extensive research into the colonial frontier and continental exploration. He became an expert on the forts of the French and Indian War. Norman Baker died on August 25, 2019 and was buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, VA.
