Happy National Pet Month

Jessica Hurlbut

Reference Assistant

In celebration of pets, May is recognized as National Pet Month. It’s a wonderful time to show a little extra appreciation for our furry friends, and books are always a great resource for everything, including learning something fun about your pets!

In addition to learning from these books, you can also just enjoy feel-good animal stories. In The Healing Power of Pets: Harnessing the Amazing Ability of Pets to Make and Keep People Happy and Healthy, we see the positive impact pets can have on our lives. I know that for me, I'm always cheered up from a difficult day when I get to come home to my cat. There’s also a lovely collection of stories called The Gift of Pets: Stories Only a Vet Could Tell. There are plenty of stories to enjoy in it. Another similar book is Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul: Stories About Pets as Teachers, Healers, Heroes, and Friends.

If you’re a parent and you’re uncertain about getting a pet because of your kids, we have a book just for you! You can check out Can We Have One? A Parent’s Guide to Raising Kids with Cats and Dogs for guidance. Sometimes we need special guidance about our pets and their well-being, and we have many great options if that’s what you’re looking for. Check out Pets on the Couch: Neurotic Dogs, Compulsive Cats, Anxious Birds, and the New Science of Animal Psychiatry. This can provide great insight into the inner workings of your pet’s mind.

We have a wide selection of Non-Fiction books about pets and animals, but we also have some great Fiction books in our collection. The Art of Racing in the Rain is a terrific book that chronicles the fictitious life of a dog and his family as he nears the end of his life. We also have the movie that is based on this book. If you’re looking for a book about a more unconventional pet, try Carrying Albert Home: The Somewhat True Story of a Man, His Wife, and her Alligator, which is about—you guessed it—a pet alligator.

It’s hard to feel anything but love toward our pets, even when they scratch up the furniture or steal food off your plate. National Pet Month is a time to really remember just how special and dear our pets are. Enjoy these photos of some of our staff members’ pets!
