1455 A Place for Writers Author Series at Handley Regional Library System continues with author Jenn Segal who will talk about her best-selling cookbook Once Upon a Chef. Jenn is the founder of Once Upon a Chef, the popular blog showcasing easy, family-friendly recipes from a chef's point of view. Her recipes have been featured on numerous websites, magazines, and television programs, including The Huffington Post, WJLA's Good Morning Washington, and Parade.com.

Handley Regional Library System, along with the Friends of the Handley Regional Library System, announces the next book drop-off date at Bowman Library on December 7^th from 9AM-12PM. Participants can bring gently used books, CDs, DVDs and electronic games. Donations will become part of the Spring Used Book Sale in March, 2020.

Its coming - a special holiday program on December 7^th at 11AM for kids and families called  Whoville Celebration!  Come dressed in your Whoville holiday finest!  Hear stories, join the puppets, and sing around the tree. Enjoy games, sing and dance, make decorations, and taste yummy gummy fruit snacks. The program is free and open to the public. 

We are excited to announce the highly anticipated Gingerbread Jamboree on December 2^nd at Handley Library at 4:30PM. Families of all ages can celebrate the holiday season with a puppet show, gingerbread stories, games, and more at the free program!

We are excited to announce the launch of a podcast series called Library Out Loud! to help promote and communicate library services, programs, materials, and news to the community. The podcast will feature quick, monthly interviews and stories with library staff on topics ranging from book and movie reviews, upcoming programs for all ages, how-to use specific library resources like research databases, system-specific news, the launch of new materials, and more.

Last weekend the movie, "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" opened in theaters, starring Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers. The release of the movie brings back wonderful memories of watching Mister Rogers as he explored many places in his neighborhood, including trips to the local public library.

The Frozen Celebration at Handley Library will be on November 23^rd at 10:30AM-12:30PM. This interactive kids program will feature face painting, balloons, craft stations, sing-alongs, stores from Frozen, and a special meet and greet with Anna and Elsa characters from the movie Frozen! 

A family 4-pack of tickets to the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester will also be raffled off for a free trip to the movies. More information can be found at www.handleyregional.org/kids.

The next class in the ongoing Tech Tuesdays series at Handley Regional Library System is All Things Android: Smart Phones and Tablets at Handley Library. Free and open to the public, the workshop is at 11AM on November 19^th. The Android experts from Sprint will cover the basics, including how to navigate commonly used features on your smartphone or tablet. Afterwards, there will be time for answering your questions.

Do you love Mystery? What about Horror? If you have a favorite type of story, check out our Genre Booklets located in the teen area of the Handley Branch. Each season we add new cards in favorite reading categories such as Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Romance. We’ve even added new categories, too. We had so much fun with our canine friends a few weeks ago with the theme Puppy Parade, and now we get to show some love on the felines in our lives! Whether you are a cat fan or not, everyone can appreciate a great cat tale! Head over to storytimes this week for some wonderful books about kitty cats, along with songs, rhymes, and more! 

On September 2, 1919, only a few months after their return from Europe, members of Company I of the 116^th Virginia Infantry marched down North Loudoun Street as part of a World War I Victory Parade.

Company I was organized at Winchester in March 1911 and formed part of the longest serving unit of the Virginia National Guard, the 116^th Virginia Regiment. The regiment, formed in 1741, had participated in every major American conflict beginning with the French and Indian War.

Singin’ in the Rain will show at Handley Library on November 16^th at 2PM. The showing is free and open to the public. The joyous film, co-directed by Stanley Donen and acrobatic dancer-star-choreographer Gene Kelly, is a charming, up-beat, graceful and thoroughly enjoyable experience with great songs, lots of flashbacks, wonderful dances - including the spectacular Broadway Melody Ballet. The showing is sponsored by the Friends of the Handley Regional Library System.

This age old question has new solutions. The library now subscribes to a feature called NoveList. NoveList can be reached from the HRLS homepage by hovering over “Research & Learn” then under “Subjects” click on “Reviews and Recommendations.”

Tech Tuesdays are coming to Handley Library!

The next class in the ongoing Tech Tuesdays series is All Things Apple – iPhones and iPads at Handley Library on November 12^th at 11AM.  Free and open to the public, the class is led by Apple OS experts from Sprint who will cover the basics, including how to navigate commonly used features on your iPhone and iPad. Afterwards, there will be time for answering your questions. This session includes 40 minutes guided instruction followed by 40 minutes for Q&A.
