Cats and Kittens Storytime

Cats and Kittens BooksWe had so much fun with our canine friends a few weeks ago with the theme Puppy Parade, and now we get to show some love on the felines in our lives! Whether you are a cat fan or not, everyone can appreciate a great cat tale! Head over to storytimes this week for some wonderful books about kitty cats, along with songs, rhymes, and more!

Cats are a great way to explore movement in preschoolers too. Stretching, bending, leaping, and sneaking! They have such a unique way of moving. In 1936 Sergei Prokofiev created a classical work for children called “Peter and the Wolf”, using a clarinet to represent the cat as it stalks around. David Bowie brought this to life in 1978 and you can listen to his narration see if you and your child can move to the music just like the cat and stalk around your home.

Here are this week's song and rhyme collection, complete with counting, letters, and descriptive words to get the most out of your week with cats and kittens.

Three Little Kittens
Three little kittens,
They lost their mittens,
And they began to cry,
Oh, mother dear,
We sadly fear
Our mittens we have lost.
What! Lost your mittens,
You naughty kittens!
Then you shall have no pie.
Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow.
You shall have no pie.

The three little kittens,
They found their mittens,
And they began to cry,
Oh, mother dear,
See here, see here,
Our mittens we have found.
What! Found your mittens,
You darling kittens!
Then you shall have some pie.
Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow.
You shall have some pie.

I Know a Cat (tune: “B-I-N-G-O”)
I know a cat with perky ears, and Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y,  and Kitty is her name-o.
She makes a sound and it’s “Meow”, and Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, and Kitty is her name-o.

I’m a Little Kitty Cat (tune: “I’m a little teapot”)
I’m a little kitty cat
Nice and sweet
Here are my whiskers
And here are my feet
When I go out hunting
Mice beware
Or you might just have a scare!

Five Little Kittens
Five little kittens standing in a row.
(Stand all five fingers up on one hand)
They nod their heads to the children so.
(Bend your fingers in a ”nod”)
They run to the left, they run to the right.
(Move hand/fingers to the left, then right)
They stand up and stretch in the bright sunlight.
(Stand fingers, stretching high)
Along comes a dog, who’s in for some fun.
(Bring other hand out like a dog chasing)
M-e-oooow, see those kittens run!
(Have hand “run” behind back)
