SCOPE AND CONTENT:  The Bettie L. Payne Records consists of an account book, marked as volume 1, kept by Bettie L. Payne when she ran a girls’ school in the Brucetown-Wadesville area of Frederick County between 1857 and 1871. The account book contains a partial roster of students on page 99. There are a number of additional items, mostly receipts and statements of accounts for tuition and other supplies, newspapers clippings, and a small amount of correspondence.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL:  Census records for 1870 indicate that Bettie L. Payne was born around 1840 and resided in the Stonewall area of Frederick County.
