SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Matt Miller Collection consists of four books printed by the Henkel Press in New Market, Virginia, between 1817 and 1820.  The Henkel Press was an important German language printer in the mid-Atlantic and the South and produced a great number of devotionals, hymnals, and other religious works for the Lutheran Church.  

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Brothers Ambrose and Solomon Henkel established the Henkel Press in 1806 in New Market, Virginia in the home of their father, Paul, a prominent Lutheran minister. Initially, the Henkel Press printed in German to meet the needs of the many German immigrants in the Shenandoah Valley, although later it also produced works in English. Ambrose Henkel (1786-1870) was also a Lutheran minister. His brother, Solomon (177-1847) was a physician, druggist, and banker. He also published local German language newspapers and took on positions as mayor and postmaster.
