SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection includes two account books from a general merchandise store in Charlestown, Virginia (now West Virginia), spanning the years 1795 to 1797. In addition, there are booklets with historical accounts of several old places in Jefferson County, including the Confederate Soldiers’ Memorial at Elmwood, in Shepherdstown, WV, which has information about the Stonewall Brigade. There is also a Bible with records for the Moor family of Jefferson County.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Jefferson County, Virginia formed from Berkeley County in 1801. Berkeley had formed from Frederick County in 1772. The account books from the general merchandise store include a listing for General William Darke, founder of Darkesville, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
