SCOPE AND CONTENT: The John Edward Janney Collection contains Janney’s medical diploma, awarded by the University of Virginia on July 2, 1874, and a biographical sketch of Janney.  

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: John Edward Janney attended Winchester Academy before studying medical school at the University of Virginia. He set up a medical practice in Frederick County, Virginia. He married Minnie P. Purcell in 1881 and they had two children who survived to adulthood. After Minnie’s death, he married Leila Baker six weeks before his death in March of 1904. He was buried at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester.
