SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains a memorandum book belonging to Samuel Brown. The book contains lists of persons owing money to Brown, as well as a diary section with daily entries about the weather and some mention of local deaths. The collection also contains the marriage certificate of Samuel Brown and Hannah Matthews, December 12, 1805.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Samuel Brown, born in 1783, was a successful merchant of Winchester, VA. He was also an active member of the Hopewell Friends Society. On February 12, 1805, he married Hannah Matthews of Baltimore, MD and had two daughters, Mary and Sarah. Brown died on August 10, 1852 and is buried in Hopewell Graveyard in Clearbrook, VA.
