SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Virginia Athey Collection contains a variety of materials to include a roster of Confederate veterans from the Winchester-Frederick County area, photographs, correspondence, and an edition of the Ladies Repository magazine from 1850.

The collection is includes photocopies of the family Bible record for Lawrence Hamman and Mary Eberly family Bible record beginning with Lawrence Hamman's birth in 1824. There are several certificates as well.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Virginia Athey is a Winchester resident with an interest in local history. 

Lawrence Hamman was born near Strasburg, Virginia in 1824. He married Mary Eberly in 1854.  In 1885, they purchased a farm and grew fruit in Frederick County, Va. During the Civil War, Mr. Hamman served in the 11th Virginia Cavalry.  Lawrence died in 1902 and Mary died in 1921.  Both are buried in Strasburg, Virginia.
