Box 1 contains annual meeting reports from 1952 to 1984 and executive committee meeting records from 1917-1986. Box 2 contains correspondence and materials related to bloodmobile visits and emergency programs from a period between 1918 and 1979. Box 3 has information about activities and miscellaneous program reports. The fourth box is made up of miscellaneous materials relating to the Red Cross including issues of Red Cross News and The Red Cross Magazine.

The remainder of the collection contains 28 scrapbooks dating from 1921 to 2006, and albums of ephemera covering a range of Red Cross activities. Two of the scrapbooks are from the Clarke County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Over the years there have been a number of reorganizations in the American Red Cross. Some materials in the collection may refer to Winchester-Frederick County, Chapter 24.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL The Winchester-Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross was established in 1917 and remains active in the community with blood programs, first aid classes, water safety programs, and disaster relief.

Henry Dunant of Switzerland established the International Red Cross in 1859 to provide more effective and humane treatment of soldiers during wartime. Clara Barton (1821-1912) would later create the American Red Cross following the model pioneered by Dunant. The American Association of the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., established on May 21, 1881, continued the tradition of offering battlefield assistance but also began to operate domestic programs to provide disaster relief, blood programs, and health and safety training. There are local chapters throughout the United States.
