Did you miss out on Hungry for History last year? If so, you don't want to miss it this year. Across Winchester and Frederick/Clarke County museums and historic sites in our community will offer a variety of programs and special events such as presentations, cooking demonstrations, hands-on activities, children’s activities, food tastings, special handouts and giveaways, displays of historic recipes, agriculture related programs and more. Volunteers will be on hand to collect your gently used books (in good, clean condition), DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks on CD and electronic games in the Bowman Library parking lot. We wish we could accept every book that is donated, but we simply don't have the space! Many books we receive cannot be sold and it takes time and energy to deal with these donations. The Friends of HRLS is run on volunteer power, so please go through your donations before bringing them to us and discard items…

Play chess to learn or strengthen your skills of the game.
Players of all ages and strengths are welcome to come and play.
We gather every week on Saturday mornings to play casual chess games.
Chess at Bowman Library is a volunteer-run program.
Chess sets and space are provided. Instructors are present when their schedule permits.

Our next author talk will be on October 14th at 6;30PM at Handley Library. Author Sue Jaffarian will talk about her recent book Finding Zelda and about writing on the road full-time. Jaffarian is the author of three critically acclaimed mystery series: The Odelia Grey, the Ghost of Granny Apples, and the Madison Rose Vampire Mysteries. She also writes the Winnie Wilde romance series, as well as general fiction and short stories. The program is free and open to the public.

Our Storytime Theme for the week of January 7th is Woodland Animals. Extend your storytime fun through the songs and activities listed on your storytime handout, including this great action activity at home. Travel though the river, climb a tree, walk through the field, and sneak into the cave. For extra fun, pack a lunch for the hunt, then create a cave in your living room with blankets to “find” the bear!
