Preservation and Canning

Posted on:

Handley Regional Library Stewart Bell Jr. Archives is proud to be a participant in the first Winchester - Frederick County - Clarke County Hungry for History event.  Hungry for History is a community event that brings together our history with a love of food.  Museums and historic sites in our community will offer a variety of programs and special events such as presentations, cooking demonstrations, hands-on activities, children’s activities, food tastings, special handouts and giveaways, displays of historic recipes, agriculture related programs and more.

Our Handley Library event will focus on the basics of food preservation and canning.  The program will take place on Thursday, August 31 from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm at the Handley Library Robinson Auditorium.  Hannah Copp (Family and Consumer Services Associate Extension Agent with Viriginia Cooperative Extension) will lead a presentation in which she discusses the history of food preservation and the science behind safe preservation.  Participants will leave with an introductory knowledge of food preserving and a few helpful handouts.

Registration is not required.  Click here for more information about the event.  If you have any additional questions, please contact the Archives Department by email at archives@handleyregional.org or call (540) 662-9041 ext. 17.

Be sure to make our program one of your stops during Hungry for History and don’t miss all the other events happening.  Hungry for History runs from August 26 – September 4.  Further information about the region’s Hungry for History event can be found here.
