Handley Library Earns National Family Place Accreditation

Posted on:

If you’ve ever watched your toddler stack blocks during storytime…
or seen your baby light up when they hear a new song…
or connected with another caregiver while your child plays nearby…

Then you already understand what this news is about.

The Handley Library branch in downtown Winchester has officially been named a Family Place Library™, becoming the first library in the Shenandoah Valley to receive this national accreditation.

While that title sounds formal, what it really means is simple:

Handley Library is nationally recognized for supporting families with young children — not just through books, but through connection, play, and early learning.

Why the First Five Years Matter

From birth to age five, children’s brains are developing faster than at any other time in life. The way adults talk, read, sing, and interact with young children has a lasting impact on language development, confidence, and social skills.

Parents and caregivers are a child’s first teachers.

Family Place Libraries are built around that idea — providing welcoming spaces, expert guidance, and meaningful programs that support caregivers in that important role.

What Families Can Explore at the Handley Branch

Families from across the Handley Regional Library System are invited to visit the Handley Library branch to experience these enhanced Family Place offerings.

1️⃣ Grow a Reader Playgroup

A six-week series designed for toddlers and caregivers, featuring play-based activities and opportunities to connect one-on-one with specialists in child development, speech, nutrition, and more.

2️⃣ Spaces Designed for Families

Dedicated areas inside the Handley Library building where families can relax, explore, and connect. The Library serves as a welcoming “third place” — not home, not work, not school — but a safe and supportive community space.

3️⃣ Grab & Grow Kits

Themed kits filled with books, toys, and hands-on activities that families can check out to support early learning at home.

Whether you’re working on colors, counting, letters, or fine motor skills, there’s a kit ready to go.

(Families from any branch are welcome to visit Handley and check out these kits.)

4️⃣ Trained, Supportive Staff

Librarians at the Handley branch receive specialized training in child development and family support. They’re here to answer questions, encourage, and connect caregivers with trusted community resources.

A Milestone for Our Community

“We’re proud to be the first Family Place Library™ in the Shenandoah Valley,” said Library Director John Huddy. “This accreditation strengthens our commitment to helping young children and their caregivers learn, connect, and thrive.”

This achievement was made possible through the Robinson Trust at Handley Library and the J2W Foundation, with support from the Winchester Campaign for Grade Level Reading.

While this accreditation applies specifically to the Handley Library branch, early literacy remains a priority across all Handley Regional Library System locations. Families are encouraged to explore programs and resources at any branch — and to visit Handley to experience its Family Place offerings.
