Celebrating Joan Wood’s Retirement and Legacy at the Archives

Posted on:

After nearly 15 years of dedicated service to the Handley Regional Library System, Joan Wood has officially retired from her role as Archives Assistant at the Stewart Bell Jr. Archives at Handley Library.

Since joining the library in 2010, Joan has become a beloved and knowledgeable figure in the world of local genealogy. With over 40 years of experience and more than 2,000 family names traced, she has inspired countless patrons to dive into their family histories. Whether leading her popular “5 Basics of Genealogy” program or co-hosting the monthly Family History Hunters sessions alongside Archives volunteer Janet Daniels, Joan has always approached her work with enthusiasm, expertise, and heart.

She also helped launch the Genealogy Lunch Bunch, a friendly monthly meetup group that brought together beginners and seasoned researchers alike. Her efforts have not only educated but connected people across generations and communities.

Beyond the archives, Joan is an avid mystery reader, antique hunter, gardener, traveler, and proud grandmother. Her warmth and passion for genealogy have left a lasting impression on all of us, and her retirement celebration this week was filled with smiles, laughter, and fond memories.

"Joan has been an amazing resource for our researchers. Her expertise in breaking down genealogical "brick walls" has helped so many people complete their family histories. She will be missed but she will continue to help coordinate our monthly Family History Hunters meetings," said Lorna Loring, Archives Librarian.

Thank you, Joan, for your years of service and the legacy you've built. Your presence will be deeply missed—but we know you’ll still be exploring new histories and making discoveries wherever life takes you.
