The Friends of Handley Regional Library System will be presenting an informative and entertaining talk with author Robert Linkous in the Handley Robinson Auditorium at the Handley Library branch on October 6, 2021 in person at 6:30 PM. The program is entitled “Southern Fried Russia: From Communism to KFC.”
Author, Robert Linkous will read and discuss the first chapter in his book “Southern Fried Russia: From Communism to KFC”. There will be time for Q & A.
Robert Linkous was born in Radford, grew up in Roanoke, read Jack Kerouac, and hitchhiked the length of the United States five times before he was twenty-one years old. In the San Francisco Bay area, he worked as a bartender. In New York, he was a wine consultant and freelance literary critic. He has an M.A. in English at the University of Virginia and has taught literature and academic writing. For three years, in Tbilisi, capital of the Republic of Georgia, he taught ESL to highly-educated professionals and wrote articles for an English-language newspaper about wine and spirits, road safety, books, theatre, art, cinema, auto racing, golf, and various peculiarities in Georgian culture and everyday life.
For seven years, until June of this year, he lived in Mytishchi, a suburb of Moscow. He traveled widely in the region: Finland, the Baltics, Poland, Ukraine, Moldova, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. During the summers of 2018 and 2019, he spent four months touring the Ural region and Siberia, which he could do freely with the visa of a permanent resident. Now he is finishing a long book about his travels and experiences in Russia. Its title is Southern Fried Russia: From Communism to KFC. The tone is light-hearted. The genre is humor.
