Newspaper Collection

The Stewart Bell Jr. Archives Newspaper Collection includes historic newspapers published in Winchester and the Lower Shenandoah Valley. While some newspapers are now available online, many are still only available on microfilm or in their original printed form. Please read below to learn more about titles and access.

The Winchester Star

The Winchester Star is available online through Newspaper Archive from 1896 through 2022. Access the database with your Library Card. Go to https://libraryaccess.newspaperarchive.com/ Enter your 14 digit card number, and register for a Newspaper Archive account. Learn more about obtaining a Handley Regional Library card here. Computers in the Archives Reading Room provide direct access for researchers.

The Northern Virginia Daily

Microfilm for issues from September 1932 to December 2014 is available in the Archives Reading Room. Issues (1936-1973) are available online from the Library of Virginia's Virginia Chronicle website.

The Clarke Courier

Microfilm for issues from February 1869 to May 2009 is available in the Archives Reading Room. Issues (1869 - 1929) are available online from the Clarke County Historical Association's website.

Winchester Historic Newspapers
