How do I get started?
First, register everyone in the family for our Youth Summer Reading Challenge by creating a Beanstack account. Already have one? Log in! If you can't remember your login information, simply email beanstackhelp@handleyregional.org for assistance or ask a youth services staff to reset your password. Get the Beanstack app to make it even easier! This digital logging software allows readers to keep track of how many minutes they are reading through a timer, a book barcode scanner, and more!
The HRLS Youth Summer Reading Challenge is open to patrons who live and work in and around our 3 service areas of Clarke County, Frederick County, and Winchester City in Virginia.
When is this happening?
You can pre-register starting on May 25, 2025, and then begin logging books or minutes read starting on June 1 until July 31, 2025.
How does this work?
Join us from June 1 to July 31, 2025, as we encourage all ages, from preschoolers to teens, to read during summer break as we enjoy a fun Reading Program "Color Our World".
Log through the Beanstack App by creating an account or signing in to log. Log your reading from June 1 to July 31, 2025.
Pre-Readers Ages 0-5
Earn online badges and raffle tickets as you count how many hours you can read this summer! Every 3 hours read = 1 virtual raffle ticket and 1 free book from the library. Log through the Beanstack App starting May 31, and try to read all the way to the "completion" of the program by reading 48 total hours by July 31! (Readers will still be able to log and participate even after passing the "end" of the program). Brag tags for pre-readers will be earned at registration and at hour benchmarks 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48.
Readers Ages 6 and Up
Earn online badges and raffle tickets as you count how many hours you can read this season! Every 6 hours read = 1 virtual raffle ticket and 1 free book from the library. Log through the Beanstack App starting June 1, and try to read all the way to the "completion" of the program by reading 96 hours total by July 31! (Readers will still be able to log and participate even after passing the "end" of the program). Brag tags for readers are earned at registration and at hour benchmarks 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, and 96.
All logging must be entered by July 31 at 11:59 PM.
Where is this taking place?
Visit all 3 branches to check out reading materials and for in person programming to supplement the reading challenge! You can also check out materials online from hoopla and Libby with your library card. However, to keep track of your reading and to earn badges and tickets for prize drawings, all logging needs to be done online. You can access the HRLS Youth Summer Reading Program anywhere with the Beanstack App!

Can adults participate?
Yes, this reading program is open to the whole family! We encourage families to read together, so the adult has a very important role as 'Account Creator' when tracking with Beanstack. Under your account, all readers in your family unit will be found and can be accessed by one login and password. Adults can choose to log their reading in this program with the rest of their family.
