SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection is comprised of military records from the National Archives for Lieutenant Colonel. George E. Biles, receipts and disbursements of Noonen Livery (1866-1868); and pages copied from published books pertaining to the units mentioned in the Noonen Livery receipt book. Also in the collection are a series of orders issued by General Cuvier Grover on the use of contraband (African-Americans) within his command, and the restrictions placed on African-American troops within his command during the Siege of Port Hudson, LA. BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: General Cuvier Grover, besides being involved in the Siege of Port Hudson, LA, served with the Union army during the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign and was present at the Battles of Third Winchester, Fishers Hill, and Cedar Creek. He was wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek. He died on June 6, 1885, and is buried at the West Point Cemetery. Biles was the commander of the 17th U. S. Infantry Regiment (renamed the 88th U. S. Colored Troops on April 4, 1864), which was assigned to the Right Wing of the Union army at the Siege of Port Hudson, LA.
