BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: The Cold War was a period of great hostility between the United States and the Soviet Union immediately following the conclusion of the Second World War and ultimately ending with the destruction of the Berlin Wall. The Cold War included hostility and subtle aggressive acts between the governments of both the US and USSR. The objective of the US for much of the war was the prevention of the spread of communism to any country, although specifically, any Western country still economically and politically vulnerable as a result of WWII. The USSR sought to spread communism and end the US powered system of capitalism that inserted itself into much of Europe after the war. The Cold War was especially tense as both countries had in their possession nuclear weapons and a strong intent on using them if the situation required it.
