SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Bailey Brothers Records collection contains two account books, an invoice book, and a sales book from Bailey Brothers’ General Merchandise in Winchester, Virginia. In addition, there are newspaper clippings, correspondence, and an IRS form belonging to W.A. Bailey.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Bailey Brothers General Merchandise was located at 4-6-8 South Market Street on the corner of Boscawen and Cameron Streets (now 30 S. Cameron Street), in Winchester, Virginia.  Its owners were William A. Cecil, and Ora Bailey, both sons of Charles P. Bailey, a merchant and farmer of Green Spring.

Bailey’s opened for business in 1904 and closed its doors in May of 1951. It opened every day but Sundays and holidays, and was particularly crowded on Saturdays when produce, meats, and other products would be bought from the country for barter. In the half-century it was in operation, the store supplied the populace of Winchester and the surrounding area with a variety of products and also served as a meeting place for the community.
