Teen Book Spotlight: New Books! (Part 5)

Our teen book spotlight this week is focused on books that have recently been added to our collection meaning they are new!!!!  New books are the best; they have a new book smell and there is just something about being one of the first people to read it.  We are featuring some amazing fiction and nonfiction this time including titles from a few debut authors!  These books and more can be found by searching the catalog using the search tag #2021yanewbooks as well as on Libby and Hoopla.  Check back next week for a new teen book spotlight and if you have any book suggestions, please let us know!!

 

Stolen Time by Danielle Rollins--In 1913 Seattle, sixteen-year-old Dorothy runs from a forced marriage and stows away on a strange aircraft occupied--revealed to be a time machine--by Ash, a former World War II fighter pilot, and they time travel to 2077 New Seattle. When she arrives in the future, she learns that Ash is suffering from pre-memories of things to come and a desire to avert the tragedies he knows are coming. Dorothy agrees to time hop with Ash and a small band of friends and the two develop feelings for one another.

 

Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi--Even though Amal Shahid is an artist and poet, he's still viewed as disruptive and unmotivated at his diverse art school. One fateful night at a local park, a fight breaks out between Amal and his friends and a group of white boys from a nearby gentrified neighborhood, leaving one of the white boys in a coma. Amal is convicted of the attack and sent to prison, even though he's not the one who put the boy in a coma. His despair and rage at having his bright future destroyed threaten to overcome him until he discovers the refuge and hope that his words and art give him.

 

Last Bus to Everland by Sophie Cameron--Forging a bond with a compassionate artist, Brody Fair joins a band of misfits and miscreants who meet weekly for adventures in a Narnia-inspired world, before dwindling magic forces him to choose between those he loves.

 

You Should See Me In a Crown by Leah Johnson--Liz Lighty doesn't care who becomes prom king and queen at her high school. She's more focused on getting into Pennington College, playing in their world-famous orchestra, and becoming a doctor. But when her financial aid package falls through, she has only one option left: her school's scholarship for prom king and queen. So, she begins a crazy candidacy for prom queen and ends up falling for Mack, the new girl also running for prom queen. Liz will have to decide between winning the crown or winning Mack's heart.

 

Ripped From the Headlines by Harold Schechter--Provides a collection of essays detailing the true stories behind over forty films as "Psycho," "The Fugitive," and "Double Indemnity" among other popular movies. The films are listed alphabetically, from "Alpha Dog" to "The Young Savages," and there are black-and-white photographs throughout.


Hunting the Unabomber by Liz Wiehl--Describes the seventeen-year hunt to discover the identity of the criminal known as the Unabomber. Describes Ted Kaczynski's crimes, why he was hard to find, the massive manhunt, and how he eventually was caught.
