Puppy Parade Storytime

Puppy Parade BooklistIf you're a dog lover, or just a lover of books about dogs, head over to Bowman, Handley, or Clarke County library for storytimes this week! We have songs, activities, and some wonderful stories to share about our furry, wet-nosed pals.

You can find books about pups and dogs from the catalog by typing in the tag: #pupsonparade. If you already have a dog and are looking for tips to better care for your pooch, we have a book to help you do that too

Homemade dog treats can be a great project to do with kids, whether you have a dog or not. If you don't have your own doggy to spoil, you can check with a local shelter to see if they'd be willing to let you bake some treats for their dogs, or make them for another family member or neighbor. Check out a book on homemade pet food, or try this recipe from the American Kennel Club:

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 ½ Cups of Dry Oatmeal (blended to a fine powder, or buy oat flour)
  • 1 Large Banana
  • ½ Cup Peanut Butter (try to use natural with less sugar and never with xylitol)

Reserve a little oat flour to dust your surface, then mix ingredients, roll out, (1/4 inch), cut out, and bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

  • Not sure what foods you can safely give your dog? Dogster has a list here. (Pssst... did you know Dogster is one of the magazines you can get at the Handley Regional Library System?)

You can sing some doggone good songs and finger plays while you work on your dog biscuits. Try some of the ones below!

Ten Little Doggies
Ten little doggies went out one day,
(hold up ten fingers)
To dig in the dirt and play, play, play.
(dig, slap knees on each ‘play’)
Five were spotted, and five were not,
(hold up one hand, then the other)
And at dinnertime they ate a lot!
(pretend to eat)
How much is that doggy in the window?
How much is that doggie in the window? (Bark twice)
The one with the waggily tail.
How much is that doggy in the window? (Bark twice)
I do hope that doggy's for sale!
(Repeat, substituting other things for window, like basket and wagon.)

Six Little Dogs
(Sung to: "Six Little Ducks")
Six little dogs that I once knew,
fat ones, skinny ones, fair ones too.
But the one little dog with the brown curly fur,
He led the others with a grr, grr, grr.
Grr, grr, grr
Grr, grr, grr
He led the others with a grr, grr, GRR!

Five Little Puppies
Five little puppies were playing in the sun.  (hold up hands, fingers extended)
This one saw a rabbit, and he began to run. (bend down 1st finger)
This one saw a butterfly, and he began to race. (bend down 2nd finger)
This one saw a cat, and he began to chase. (bend down 3rd finger)
This one tried to catch his tail, and he went round and round. (bend down 4th finger)
This one was so quiet, he never made a sound. (bend down thumb)
