Have you always wanted to check out a Youth Services program at Handley Library, but you’d been a little nervous about how to get yourself and all your kids from the car into the building? Maybe you’ve found our plan your visit page, but you still have questions? I get it, it’s a daunting task; street parking, stairs to the entrance, and a difficult to find elevator. Maybe you’ve lugged a car seat up those winding stairs a few times, but never found the elevator! Or you’ve come with your stroller only to find that there isn’t a bathroom stall large enough to accommodate your stroller (keep reading, there is!). Whatever your deterrent, I’m hoping to help answer all your questions and concerns about vising the Handley Branch with children of any age.

Strollers:

Whether you’ve got one kid or three, the stroller is an excellent way to get you and all the kiddos, plus library books, snacks, and diapers into the library. There is a ramp to access the library on the right hand side of the building. As you arrive at the front steps, take the sidewalk down Braddock street along the side of the building. As a bonus, when you find the ramp, you will also find our reading garden which houses our StoryWalk! Once you enter the library, go straight back, under the lowered ceiling between the circulation desks, and you will find our elevator at the back of the building. The Children’s room is located on the second floor, and the Benham Gallery (where our STEAM programs take place) is in the basement. The Children’s room is a breastfeeding and diaper change friendly location–we even have a few emergency diapers in our restrooms for unforeseen circumstances! If you need to use a bathroom that can accommodate your stroller in the stall with you, take the elevator to the basement, where our handicap restroom is located.

Parking:

We offer street parking at the Handley Branch, which you should be able to easily access on the streets right around the library. This parking is metered during the weekdays until 6pm, so you will need to pay a small amount. I recommend downloading the parkmobile app to make your trip way easier! When you arrive in your parking space, the meter will include a green label that indicates your zone. In the app, you will enter that zone, and then pay for your parking. The app will send you a reminder with 15 minutes to spare, and you can extend your time if the kids are not ready to leave yet. Parking is entirely free on Saturday when the library is open, so plan a special visit to make the most out of your downtown weekend experience!

*Note: you will very likely get a ticket if you do let your meter run out!*

Book Drop and Curbside Pickup:

If today is just not your day to unload the whole crew for a morning at the library, but you’ve got a lot of books that are due, never fear! We have a book drop AND curbside pick up! You can sign up for curbside pick up through our MyLibro app. To access the book drop and curbside pick up, drive past the library on Piccadilly street, turn right on Washington street, and then right on W. Fairfax. From here you can access the one way Library Lane that goes behind the library. (See picture at the top of this page for a map!)

There is lots more to say about accessibility at the library, including our amazing partnership with Kulture City to provide you and your littles with tools in the event of a sensory overstimulation. Read more here about accessibility!

Finally, because we know our building can be confusing there is always someone on duty at the desk directly inside the door. They are a friendly face you can point you in whatever direction you need to go!
