Ms. Donna's Favorite Dog Books!

Ms. Donna's Dog Book PicksThis week Ms. Donna is sharing her favorite dog books!

Tune in on Wednesday, May 20th at 11:00 AM where the puppets will join her for a LIVE Storytime event on the Handley Regional Library System's Facebook page

We have more exciting news this week. The library is slowly beginning a process of collecting materials that have been checked out. Beginning Monday, May 18, bring your checked out items to the library book drops where they will be quarantined and sanitized before returning to the shelves. Reopening for book check-outs will happen in stages and you can keep up to date on our Covid-19 page

Now, let's talk dog books! We have some great digital resources to suggest this week. Beginning with Hoopla, you can find How Much is That Doggie in the Window by Iza Trapani, which is a great singing book of a beloved classic song. Ball by Mary Sullivan will get you giggling as you watch the dog's attempts to play ball when no one will play along, and Bad Dog Flash by Ruth Paul gets into a bit of trouble here and there, but is still well loved.

If you love Biscuit, Hoopla has a whole series of books about this adorable pup. And if you really love lots of dogs, you can find a story about one of our favorite Dalmatians, Lucky, in Lucky's Busy Afternoon by Annie Auerbach. Perhaps you are looking for some fun Disney music. You can check out the soundtrack to 101 Dalmatians.

As we head over to Tumblebooks, you can login through this link and find Boomer's Big Surprise by Constance McGeorge and Dixie by Grace Gilman.

Finally, Libby by Overdrive has several favorite dog books, including How Rocket Learned to Read and Rocket Writes a Story by Tad Hills, Big Dog... Little Dog by P.D. Eastman, and Too Many Dogs by Lori Haskins Houran.

As always, we leave you with some doggy tunes! There are several versions of the song "How Much is that Doggy in the Window", such as the one below. Take a trip in a way-back machine and watch this 1952 version of "How Much is that Doggie in the Window by Patti Page, with adorable images added from Disney's Lady and the Tramp.

Ten Little Doggies
Ten little doggies went out one day,
(hold up ten fingers)
To dig in the dirt and play, play, play.
(dig, slap knees on each ‘play’)
Five were spotted, and five were not,
(hold up one hand, then the other)
And at dinnertime they ate a lot!
(pretend to eat)

How much is that doggie in the window?
How much is that doggie in the
window? (Bark twice)
The one with the waggily tail.
How much is that doggie in the
window? (Bark twice)
I do hope that doggie's for sale!
(Repeat, substituting other things for
window, like basket and wagon.)

Six Little Dogs
(Sung to: "Six Little Ducks")
Six little dogs that I once knew,
fat ones, skinny ones, fair ones too.
But the one little dog with the brown curly fur,
He led the others with a grr, grr, grr.
Grr, grr, grr
Grr, grr, grr
He led the others with a grr, grr, GRR!

Five Little Puppies
Five little puppies were playing in the
sun. (hold up hands, fingers extended)
This one saw a rabbit, and he began to run.
(bend down 1st finger)
This one saw a butterfly, and he began to
race. (bend down 2nd finger)
This one saw a cat, and he began to chase.
(bend down 3rd finger)
This one tried to catch his tail, and he went
round and round. (bend down 4th finger)
This one was so quiet, he never made a
sound. (bend down thumb)
