A Library Card: More Than Books

Although the American Library Association's "Library Card Sign-Up Month" has officially passed, your library card is better now than ever! Did you know that using your FREE library card is worth more than just books? Our special collections are as easy to check-out as your average library book! Which collections below have you checked out? 

  • WI-FI HOTSPOTS: Browse the internet from any mobile device 24/7! 
    • The devices allow free internet connection on the go and anywhere Verizon or

      T-Mobile service is available on your smartphone, laptop, tablet, or other mobile device.  You can check these out at the Circulation Desk at all 3 of our libraries. 

      The purpose of the circulation of mobile hotspots is to lessen the gap of the digital divide by providing our patrons with greater access to the internet beyond the walls of the library.  In addition to general internet usage, you can access our digital library, download eBooks, and so much more with free internet access where coverage is available through Verizon or T-Mobile.

  • LAUNCHPADS: Educational and entertaining tablets for all ages!

    • Designed for kids of all ages, the tablets are pre-loaded with high-quality, ad-free apps that are both fun and educational, promoting literacy through digital content. The devices are powered by an Android operating system and feature a 7” high-definition touch screen, universal audio jack, and a durable, protective bumper. The content collection spans subject areas from math and science to critical thinking and creativity, and features themed learning packs including animals, princesses, fantasy, nature, and more. Tablets can be checkout out for 7 days at a time and holds are not available. 

  • VIDEO GAMES: Check out your favorite PS4, Xbox One, and Wii games!
    • Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Wii video games are now available for patrons to check out in person from the Bowman Library in Stephens City, Handley Library in Winchester, or through reservation online to pickup from the library location of their choice.

      We have over 60 video games for a variety of ages with plans to add additional titles. Patrons may check out one game at a time on their library card and keep it for up to 3 weeks. Hold requests and one renewal are allowed.

  • NATURE BACKPACKS: Explore your own backyard or a Virginia State Park! 

    • These backpacks come with all the tools an explorer needs, from pocket naturalist guides, a magnifying lens, to an observation container. At check-out, you also receive a Virginia State Park Pass. All materials in the backpack and the pass need to be returned in a 3-week period. A select number of Nature Backpacks are located at each of our 3 library branches. Enjoy the great outdoors with this special collection!
