Celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month!

This September, Handley Regional Library, the American Library Association, and libraries around the nation have been celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. We encourage every child to sign up for a library card. This month many did at our local libraries.

We wish to remind students, parents, and caregivers, that your library card is the most important school supply of all. A library card provides access to technology, multimedia content. and educational programming that transforms lives and strengthens communities. We know that libraries provide people of all ages the opportunity to pursue their dreams and interests.

The national honorary chair of Library Card Sign-Up Month 2021 is Marley Dias, a 16-year-old author and founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks. She is an example of a teen making a difference in her world by identifying important books in addition to producing Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices. Handley Regional Library has many of the nearly 7,000 books she has amassed in her collection to identify books that reflect persons of color.

Visit your local library soon to check out some books perfect for you and to find out all that your library card can provide.
