We are excited to announce a new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) based program at Handley Library in Winchester on August 7th at 2PM called Alien Science Show. Presented by the interactive group ScienceTellers, kids and families will enjoy an action-packed alien adventure using science experiments for special effects.
Bags 4 My Cause at MARTIN'S
It’s the giving program that makes it easy for you to support your community and a healthy environment – at the same time!
For the month of August, each time a $2.50 reusable Bags 4 My Cause Bag is purchased at the MARTIN'S located at 400 Gateway Drive, Winchester, $1 will be donated the library system. This means more funding for programs, services, and materials at your local library.
We have a special program reflecting on the history of John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859 and the impact of race relations. John Brown: Monuments and Mythology will be on August 3rd at 2PM at Handley Library in Winchester.
Natsu Con is at Bowman Library on July 29th from 1PM-7PM. The teen event is sponsored by the Teen Advisory Board at Bowman Library and is free and open to the public. Focused on anime and comic characters, attendees will hear from special speakers who will focus on developing anime characters, Nick Coleman with a talk about how super heroes have issues too, an artist alley, character panels, dance presentations, cosplay contents, Japanese snacks, and more. The day ends with a drawing workshop by cartoonist Paul Merklein of Wisconsin.
The Valley Assistance Network, a program of United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, is joining forces with the Handley Regional Library System and United Bank to host a free, family fun event focused on financial education. The "Money Smart" event will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Handley Library.

The new logo is now one color and has the word “system” added to it to represent how the non-profit group supports the entire library system - Bowman Library, Clarke County Library, and Handley Library - through funding of materials, programs, and services for patrons.

The Friends of the Handley Regional Library System’s annual bus trip to the 2019 National Book Festival is on August 31st. The cost is $25 per seat and the conference is free and open to the public at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The festival is packed with 140 authors and other programs centered on literacy from every genre. This year’s lineup includes U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, historians David McCullough and Michael Beschloss, celebrity D.C.
We are excited to announce their next successful gardening program for adults– Veggies in Your Garden – on July 13th at 2PM at Handley Library. Attendees will learn the types of vegetables they can grow and cook right from their garden. Vegetable tastings will also be available to understand the difference. The program is free and open to the public.

Don't miss Robin Hood Misdirected on July 10th at 3PM at Handley Library. The adaption is from Jack Neary and is given a fresh, funny and exciting spin when the Misdirected Theatre Company fails to show up for a sold-out performance! Attendees will experience many laughs, lots of adventure, and swashbuckling action with the Winchester Little Theatre performance. The program is free and open to the public.
One Book One Community announces the 2019 One Book as My Beloved World by Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
The author was born on June 25, 1954, in the Bronx borough of New York City. She became the first Latina Supreme Court Justice on May 26, 2009. Her memoir met the criteria for selection by the committee – has widespread appeal, is available in paperback and Spanish, and is currently in print.
The Stewart Bell Jr. Archives announces a unique book talk focused on connecting with your biological family through genealogy. Shannon Bennett & Brianne Kirkpatrick, authors and genetic genealogists, will present their new book, The DNA Guide for Adoptees: How to use Genealogy and Genetics to Uncover Your Roots, on July 10th at 6:30PM at Handley Library.

Our video game collections has expanded to Handley Library!
Previously games were only physically available at Bowman Library, but the collection has expanded due to community interest. Popular Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Wii video games are included. You can also select games online to pick up from the library location of you choice in Berryville, Winchester, and Stephens City.
