BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: The Vietnam War was a conflict between North and South Vietnam from 1955-1975. The U.S. entered this conflict in 1965 as regular US combat troops were deployed in an unsuccessful attempt to keep Communist North Vietnam from invading South Vietnam. At the height of the war in 1968 there were 531,000 troops deployed in country. The last US troops left in 1972. The country was officially united as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in April of 1975.
