Tails & Tales of the Safari

Are you ready to read this week? We’re going on a Safari!

It’s not too late to sign up for our summer reading program. There is plenty of summertime left to read, log, and win with the help of our theme this week. Head  to HandleyRegional.org/YouthSummerReading for all the details on how you can earn virtual raffle tickets towards prizes and free books from the library as you log your reading through the Beanstack App.

This week’s badge challenge is Tails & Tales of the Safari and you can complete the activities when you log on to Beanstack, go to the Summer 2021-Tails & Tales for Pre-Readers challenge, scroll down a bit and click on "Badges", then click on "Activity Badges." You'll then look for the Safari badge:

Unearned Safari Badge

Click on the badge and choose any three of the following challenges to earn this week’s badge and a raffle ticket! Once you earn it, the badge will show in color and be added to your growing list of earned badges! Plus, you will earn a virtual ticket you can then use to select the prize drawing you wish to enter.

  • Talking: Make up a story together: Make up a story about a safari adventure and encourage your child(-ren) to add elements and events to the story as you go along.

  • Singing: This is a great song to move to while you sing about the different animals.
    THE ELEPHANT GOES
Sung to: “This is the Way”
This is the way the elephant goes
With a curly trunk instead of a nose
The rhino all hairy and fat
Has a sharp horn in place of a hat
The hippo with his mouth so wide
    Let's see what's inside
The wiggly snake upon the ground
    Crawls along without a sound
    But monkey see, monkey do
Is the funniest animal I ever knew!

  • Reading: Check out and read any book from this week’s search tag: #talesofthesafari

  • Writing: Use the link to access safari themed pre-writing and writing worksheets.

    Safari Skills
  • Playing: Gather any animal figurines you may have around the house. If you don’t have any, grab some blank paper and draw pictures of a lion, elephant, zebra, rhino or any other animals you would see on a safari. You can take your animal friends outside and pretend you are on a safari. What do you see? What is the weather like? How do the animals interact? Use your imagination!

  • Attend a program this week at any Handley Regional Library branch or watch one online. Check the calendar for the perfect program for you! You can also see virtual programs on the Youth Services YouTube playlist.

Looking for more finger plays or songs to sing? Try one of these!

5 Little Lions
One little lion, roaring at the zoo,
Called for another: ROAR!
Then there were two.

Two little lions, underneath a tree,
Called for another: ROAR! ROAR!
Then there were three.

Three little lions, who heard a distant roar,
Called for another: ROAR! ROAR! ROAR! Then there were four.

Four little lions, happy and alive,
Called for another: ROAR! ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!
Then there were five.

Five little lions,
ROAR! ROAR! ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!
Ran off to play and then there were no more.

I’m a Giraffe
I’m a big tall giraffe stretching way up high
A big tall giraffe, I almost reach the sky
I eat the leaves from the tallest tress
And when I run, I move with ease
I’m a big tall giraffe stretching way up high
Way...up...high!

I'm a Little Zebra
(Sung To: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little zebra white and black
With a bush mane running down my back
I like to gallop and run and play
Out on the African plains all day

Read those books and earn those badges all week long and I’ll see you next week for a new theme.
