  • Talking: After reading a book about monkeys, talk with your child about what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Ask questions to get them thinking about the sequence of events.

  • Singing: Act out this monkey song. What other movements can the money make?

    UNDERNEATH THE MONKEY TREE
    Sung to: "The Muffin Man"

Come and play a while with me,
    Underneath the monkey tree.
    Monkey See and Monkey Do,
Just like monkeys in the zoo.

Swing your tail, one, two, three,
    Underneath the monkey tree.
    Monkey See and Monkey Do,
Just like monkeys in the zoo.

Jump around and smile like me
    Underneath the monkey tree.
    Monkey See and Monkey Do,
Just like monkeys in the zoo.

  • Reading: Check out and read any book from this week’s search tag: #talesofmonkeymischief

  • Writing: Choose a monkey craft to make with your child.

    Play Ideas
  • Playing: SHARE THE STORY of Caps for Sale

REVIEW THE STORY: Make a list of the characters in the story. Review the events at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Discuss the problem and the solution of the story. "So it sounds like the cap played a very important role in this story, because (as you said) the cap was what the monkey took from the seller. And, the seller was able to trick the monkeys by pretending to throw down his cap. Let’s take some time now to make this very important prop or object from the story."

HAT MAKING: Have students move to their desks and make simple cone hats out of paper. Have each student decorate their hat with markers or crayons.

ROLE PLAY: Split the group into two. Have half the group put their hats away and stand on chairs, they are the monkeys. Have the other half of the group keep their hat on, they are the peddler. Teacher narrates story while all students act out the action. All peddlers and all monkeys do their action at the same time. Afterwards, switch roles and act out the story for a second time allowing each student to try out the other role.

  • Attend a program this week at any Handley Regional Library branch or watch one online. Check the calendar for the perfect program for you! You can also see virtual programs on the Youth Services YouTube playlist.

I'm a Little Monkey
[Tune: I'm a Little Teapot ]

I’m a little monkey in the tree
Swinging by my tail so merrily.
I can leap and fly from tree to tree.
I have lots of fun you can see.

I’m a little monkey, watch me play
Munching on bananas every day.
Lots of monkey friends to play with me.
We have fun up in the tree.

Monkey See, Monkey Do

The monkey stomp, stomps, stomps his feet
The monkey stomp, stomps, stomps his feet
Monkey see, monkey do
The monkey does the same as you!

The monkey claps, claps, claps his hands
The monkey claps, claps, claps his hands
Monkey see, monkey do
The monkey does the same as you!

The monkey covers, covers, covers his eyes
The monkey covers, covers, covers his eyes
Monkey see, monkey do
The monkey does the same as you!

The monkey jumps, jumps, jumps up and down
The monkey jumps, jumps, jumps up and down
Monkey see, monkey do
The monkey does the same as you!

Read those books and earn those badges all week long and I’ll see you next week for a new theme.
