Musical Instruments Storytime @ HRLS

musicalinstruments

This week the Handley Regional Library System will take a look at Musical Instruments! Come on in this week to our storytimes at Bowman, Clarke County, or Handley for some musical book fun, then attend the Instrument Petting Zoo at Handley Library on February 16th at 2:00 pm.

Head over to our website and search for the tag #musicalplay for great book ideas, then enjoy the following songs and activities at home. Scroll to the bottom for additional activities to explore at home.

The Finger Band
(Tune of: “All Around the Mulberry Bush”)
(Start with hands behind back and wiggle fingers as you slowly bring them in front.)
The finger band is coming to town,
Coming to town, coming to town.
The finger band is coming to town
So early in the morning.

This is the way they wear their hats
(Dance fingers on head)
Wear their hats, wear their hats.
This is the way we wear their hats,
So early in the morning.

This is the way they beat their drum
(Pat tummy like a drum)
Beat their drum, beat their drum.
This is the way they beat their drum,
So early in the morning.

The finger band is going away,
(Slowly wiggle fingers behind you as you lower your voice to a whisper.)
Going away, going away.
The finger band is going away
So early in the morning.

Aiken Drum Musical Instruments!
There was a man lived in the moon, lived in the moon, lived in the moon,
There was a man lived in the moon,
And his name was Aiken Drum.

Chorus
And he played upon a ladle, a ladle, a ladle,
And he played upon a ladle,
and his name was Aiken Drum.

(Build Aiken Drum in between new instruments)
His mouth was made from an orange…
His mouth blew in a harmonica (tuba, flute, etc.)

His hands were made of carrots…
His hands played on a guitar (piano, bongos, etc.)

His ears were made of apricots…
And his ears heard the clarinet (banjo, trumpet, etc.)

Old McDonald Had a Band
(Variations on Raffi’s Song from Singable Songs for the Very Young)

Old McDonald Had a Band. Toot-toot, toot-toot, toot.
And in that band he had a flute.
Toot-toot, toot-toot, toot.
With a toot-toot here, and a toot-toot there.
Here a toot. There a toot. Everywhere a toot-toot.
Old McDonald Had a Band. Toot-toot, toot-toot, toot.

Old McDonald Had a Band. Toot-toot, toot-toot, toot.
And in that band he had a saxophone.
Honk-honk, honk-honk, honk… With a honk-honk here…
Continue with drum (thump-thump)
Cymbals (crash-crash)
Trumpet (blast-blast) etc.

Additional Music and Movement at home:

Check out Jim Gill’s Music Play CD. It has a fun activity to play along with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Allegro Con Brio.

You can enjoy Jim Gill’s version with the kids, then download the original symphony free on Freegal with your library card and pin.

Make some plastic shakers for some musical instrument fun at home. You can find some “explode proof” ideas at letsplaykidsmusic.com. Or create some homemade egg shakers now that the stores will soon have plastic Easter eggs available. Fill plastic eggs with beans or rice, then secure them with colorful duct tape. When they’re finished, play along with The Learning Groove’s “I Can Shake My Shaker Eggs” to the music of Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King.
