Groundhog Day Poster

You can find some great books that will tell you all about the groundhog and his special day by clicking on the search bar above and typing in the tag: #groundhogday.  Here are some of our favorites you may wish to check out.

Groundhog Weather School by Joan Holub. When Groundhog realizes he needs helpers all over the country to accurately forecast the weather, he establishes a school to teach young groundhogs how to properly determine when spring will arrive.

Groundhog's Dilemma by Kristen Remenar. Groundhog wants to please all the animals, but half of them want spring to come quickly and the other half do not--and all of them think he controls the seasons, so what is a poor groundhog to do on Groundhog Day?

Groundhug Day by Anne Marie Pace. Moose is planning the biggest Valentine's Day party ever. But can he convince his friend, Groundhog, to stay around to celebrate without hiding from his shadow?

Grumpy Groundhog by Marueen Wright. It's Groundhog's Day, and everyone is gathered to find out if it's time for spring. But Groundhog does NOT want to leave his cozy bed in his cozy den. Will the townspeople be able to coax him outside to do his job?

Groundhog's Runaway Shadow by David Biedrzycki. Little Phil Groundhog and his shadow do everything together, but when they grow up the more adventurous shadow wants to travel, so he leaves--but neither is happy, so Phil goes searching for his friend.

How Groundhog's Garden Grew by Lynne Cherry. Squirrel teaches Little Groundhog how to plant and tend a vegetable garden.

Double Trouble Groundhog Day by Bethany Roberts. When Grampie Groundhog decides to retire from forecasting the weather, he has twins Greta and Gregory draw straws to see who will take over the important job, but the winner is so nervous the two put aside their squabbling and work together.

Here are some songs to sing along with Bowman Bill this week as he makes his weather prediction! Download a coloring page of Bill here.

Mr. Groundhog

Mr. Groundhog is inside his home, warm and fast asleep.
But he'll wake up and poke his head out for one tiny peep.
If the day is cloudy and cool, He'll go for a stroll.
But if the sun is shining bright - Pop! Back in his hole!

Oh Groundhog's Day (Tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb)

Do you see your shadow, shadow, shadow?
Do you see your shadow?
On groundhog’s day?

Yes, I see my shadow, shadow, shadow.
Yes, I see my shadow
On Groundhog’s Day.

OR

I don’t see my shadow, shadow, shadow,
I don’t see my shadow
On Groundhog’s Day.

Away in a Meadow
(Tune: Away in a Manger)

Away in a meadow, all covered with snow
Luna, the young groundhog, looks for her shadow
The clouds in the sky determine our fate,
If winter will leave us all
Early or late.

Five Little Groundhogs
The first little groundhog digs a home in the fall,
And curls up all winter rolled up like a ball.

The second little groundhog comes out of his lair,
On February second to get some fresh air.

The third little groundhog looks up at the sun,
He then sees his shadow and goes on the run.

The fourth little groundhog at his dark shadow peeks,
He goes back to his burrow for six more weeks.

The fifth little groundhog hopes that skies will be gray,
So that he will know that spring is on its way.
