Smokey Bear Reading Challenge

Preregistration is open for the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge on Beanstack. It is open to all ages, 0-99. The challenge begins August 10. This reading challenge is a joint effort among HRLS, the Library of Virginia and the USDA Forestry Service. The reading program is found in Beanstack. We are celebrating Smokey Bear’s 80 anniversary.

Receive a Smokey Bear sticker when you register. Read 3 books and complete 6 activities to complete the challenge and receive a Smokey Bear information card and an entry into the prize drawing on December 1. No tickets are needed to enter the drawing.

The program in Beanstack ends on November 30.

At the end of the program all participants that have completed the challenge will be placed in a drawing. The prizes include a Smokey Bear stuffed animal, a 100-piece puzzle, stickers, decals, a Harvester Jeep model car, a Smokey Bear game and other items purchased by the Friends of HRLS and items gifted by the Forestry Service.

Winter Reading Challenge

Winter Reading Challenge 2024: This challenge is now closed- check back in next January!

The 2024 Winter Reading Challenge theme was Where We Come From, inspired by the captivating picture book, "Where We Come From," a poetic masterpiece written by John Coy, Shannon Gibney, Sun Yung Shin, and Diane Wilson. Participants were immersed in the rich history and captivating stories of individuals, exploring themes of family, history, identity, and belonging. Through the magic of literature, readers embarked on a transformative journey that encouraged self-reflection and a deeper understanding of their own personal narratives. All while earning badges on a virtual bingo card!

We challenged each participant to read and log at least 8 hours (or 480 minutes) during the challenge. Earn fun badges for logging your reading, completing activities, submitting book reviews, and earning bingo. Earn badges in a row, column, or diagonal to finish the challenge and earn your bingo badge.

Top-performing participants that complete the entire BINGO card receive an additional ticket.

Register HERE for the "Where We Come From" winter reading challenge, sponsored by our friends at The River Radio Station, 95.3 and on Beanstack. Reading logs were recognized during January 1-31, 2024. Join us next time for Winter Reading Challenge 2025.
