Living Abroad: Immigrant or Expat (Postponed)

Visiting a country and moving there are two very different propositions. Tackling the essentials—food, housing, work, visas—is a constant across the world. Making friends and building meaningful relationships is a more elusive part of the equation, but no less important. What does it take to feel at home in another culture, sometimes halfway across the world? The answer varies from person-to person. The two women at this program will share a tips and insights about living abroad and returning to America.

Janet McMahon is an American writer who has lived in France for 24 years, working as a translator, dubbing supervisor and photographer. Before that she lived in Greece for three years, working as a newspaper columnist and English teacher. She grew up in New York and also worked as a reporter and photographer in Virginia. Janet currently lived in Frederick County, Virginia.

Liz England moved to Winchester in 2006 to accept a job offer at Shenandoah University.  She had lived and worked in Egypt for six years and one year each in Hong Kong and Indonesia.  She will speak about living, teaching and parenting abroad.
