Community-wide Youth Summer Reading Program Announced at Handley Regional Library System

Handley Regional Library System announces the community-wide Youth Summer Reading Program for kids and teens as June 5th-August 11th.   Following the theme of “Tails and Tales”, readers and pre-readers can win prizes from points they receive when completing a book, graphic novel, eBook, or audiobook.  The long-awaited program features a mix of virtual programs including story sharing, music, STEAM-based activities, and interactive experiences for kids and teens from all interest levels.  The program kicks off on June 5th with a Virtual Rally for Reading with several programs available on Facebook and YouTube @handleyregional and a reading finale celebration on August 14th where participants will be congratulated and receive awards/prizes.  Prizes include gift cards, activity kits, book bundles and other age-appropriate surprises.

Participants can find out more and register at www.handleyregional.org/youthsummerreading starting June 5th

“Our Youth Summer Reading Program for kids and teens comes at a critical time,” says John Huddy, Director of Handley Regional Library System.  “We know the pandemic has impacted learning at all levels.  Combine that with summer slide, which is a time when many students’ reading and comprehension skills ‘slide backwards’ due to inactivity, and you have a critical literacy gap that needs to be met.  Library staff has been focused creating a summer filled with fun, educational programs, amazing prizes for incentivizing participation, and a lot more.  Public library services are critical during all environments, and we’re excited to offer the community a stellar reading program for the youth in our community.”

Media partners for the Youth Summer Reading Program include 95.3 and iHeart Media at the time of press publication.

Handley Regional Library System would also like to thank the following sponsors for their support of prizes, programming, and/or supplies:  Cork Street Tavern, Game Stop, Drew Price -Realtor, Firehouse Subs, Nicole Lewis of Coldwell Banker Premier, Tech Team Solutions, Valley Pool & Spa, Bluebells, Kimberly’s, Scarpa Alta, Violino Ristorante Italiano, Old Town Stained Glass, Handworks Gallery, Tin Top Handmade, Village Square Restaurant, Roma Old Town Pizzeria, Winchester Book Gallery, Exotic Himalayan Handicrafts, El Centro, Thai Winchester Restaurant, and Tinker Toys.
